Fathom is an action-adventure game that allows player to switch control between both a dolphin and a seagull. The game was developed by Rup Fulop, known for his Atari 2600 ports of Missile Command, Atlantis, and other classic titles.
Players control Proteus, who must rescue Neptina (Neptune's daughter) by taking the form of both a dolphin and a seagull.
Players start the game as a dolphin, where they must submerge several screens, avoiding obstacles, and touching seahorses. Doing this helps locate the trident pieces, which are in different locations each level and playthrough.
Players then assume the role of the seagull. Flying several screens horizontally reveals clouds and obstacles. The pink clouds are collected which become stars, also helping to locate the remaining trident pieces.
After collecting the trident, players must again become the dolphin in order to rescue Neptune's daughter from her undersea cage. Once the game is complete, the player may continue playing at a higher difficulty.
