Overview

Tobaku Mokushiroku Kaiji (loosely translated as, and known in-game as, "The Gambling Apocalypse: Kaiji") is a gambling-themed adventure game developed and published by Kodansha (along with WILL) for the PlayStation in Japan on May 25, 2000.

Based on the Nobuyuki Fukumoto gambling manga of the same name, Tobaku Mokushiroku Kaiji is set during the first story arc and has players controlling an indebted man in the gambling ship Espoir as he participates in an underground tournament of "Gentei Janken" ("Restricted Rock Paper Scissors") in an attempt to relieve his massive debt. While series protagonist Kaiji Itou is not the game's protagonist, he does appear early on to aid the player.

The gameplay involves moving around the ship (in an isometric perspective) and challenging other participants of the tournament to games of a unique variation of rock paper scissors, which involves limited-use cards (resembling each call) and betting with loans (resembled as "stars"). Despite the simple premise, much of the game involves acquiring information on, and playing mind games with, each opponent.

Gameplay

The game's sole gamble is Gentei Janken ("Restricted Rock Paper Scissors"), in which numerous participants are given four cards of each call (Rock, Paper, and Scissors) and three "stars", and must bet their stars in games of rock paper scissors. The objective of the game is to survive the tournament, in which they must use up all 12 cards within four "hours" and have at least three stars in possession.
