Overview

Heavy Metal Geomatrix is a 3D sci-fi third-person weapon-based platform-fighter developed and released by Capcom for arcades (using Dreamcast-based Sega NAOMI hardware) in 2001. It was later ported to the Dreamcast in Japan (on July 12, 2001), North America (on September 13, 2001), and Europe (by Bigben on April 12, 2002).

Based on the Heavy Metal comics magazine, Geomatrix features a dark and gritty aesthetic that combines sci-fi with fantasy locales. While it's not based on any story in the Heavy Metal universe, it features both consultation by the then-owner of the magazine (comic book artist Kevin Eastman) and character designs by comic book artist Simon Bisley. It also features a licensed soundtrack by heavy metal artists (including Megadeth, Halford, Corrosion of Conformity, and Dust to Dust).

The story takes place in the late 21st century, where evolution in Nanobot micro-robotic technology allowed people to abandon the real world for cyberspace. Due to a catastrophic event that floods most of the Earth's landmass, power wars between multiple gangs began (using cyberspace as the battleground).

The game is a spiritual successor to Spawn: In the Demon's Hand, with the gameplay similar to the Cyber Troopers Virtual-On series (in that it takes place behind-the-back, with a camera lock-on to an opponent). Matches are played in either a 1v1, 2v1, or 2v2 scenario, with up to two human players playing at a time (though, in the arcade version, two separate cabinets can be linked up for four-player multiplayer). Each character starts with a weapon (including swords and both small and large firearms) and can find additional weapons and items (including booby traps and jetpacks).

Gameplay

Heavy Metal Geomatrix is an arena fighting game that pits you against 3 enemies where you can fight with your feet and hands (using different fighting styles depending on the character) or use a variety of weapons. The game is set and feeds from the comic series/universe of Heavy Metal.
